“You’re a wizard, Harry,” Hagrid said. “And you’re coming to Hogwarts.”

“너는 마법사란다 해리”해그리드가 말했다. “너는 이제 호그와트에 갈거야”

“What’s Hogwarts?” Harry asked.

“호그와트가 뭐죠?” 해리가 물었다.

“It’s wizard school.”

“마법사 학교란다”

“It’s not a public school, is it?”

“공립 학교는 아니죠? 그렇죠?”

“No, it’s privately run.”

“아니야. 사립학교란다.”

“Good. Then I accept. Children are not the property of the state; everyone who wishes to do so has the right to offer educational goods or services at a fair market rate. Let us lea-ve at once.”

“좋아요. 그럼 받아들이겠습니다. 아이들은 나라의 소유물이 아니에요. 원하는 사람들은 모두 공정한 시장 가격에 교육 재화와 서비스를 제공할 권리가 있죠. 지금 바로 떠납시다.”

“Malfoy bought the whole team brand-new Nimbus Cleansweeps!” Ron said, like a poor person. “That’s not fair!”

“말포이가 자기 팀 전부한테 최신 님버스 클린스윕을 사줬어!”론이 가난한 사람처럼 말했다. “이건 불공평해!”

“Everything that is possible is fair,” Harry reminded him gently. “If he is able to purchase better equipment, that is his right as an individual. How is Draco’s superior purchasing ability qualitatively different from my superior Snitch-catching ability?”

“가능한 모든 것은 공평해.” 해리가 점잖게 론에게 상기시켜주었다. “말포이가 나은 장비를 구매할 수 있다면, 그건 개인으로서 말포이의 권리야. 드라코의 우세한 구매력이 스니치를 잡아내는 나의 우세한 능력과 어떻게 질적으로 다를 수 있지?”

“I guess it isn’t,” Ron said crossly.

“다르지 않은 것 같아” 론이 뾰루퉁하게 말했다.

Harry laughed, cool and remote, like if a mountain were to laugh. “Someday you’ll understand, Ron.”

해리는 마치 산이 웃는 것 처럼 초연하게 웃었다. “언젠가 이해하게 될거야 론.”

Professor Snape stood at the front of the room, sort of Jewishly. “There will be no foolish wand-wa-ving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don’t expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few who possess, the predisposition…I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.”

스네이프 교수는 교실 앞편에 서있었다, 약간 유대인스럽게. “여기서는 멍청하게 지팡이 휘둘러대거나 주문 외우는건 금지다. 너희 중 많은 수가 포션 제조의 미묘한 과학과 정밀한 예술을 알아볼 수 있을거라 생각하지 않는다. 하지만 너희 중 재능을 가진 소수에게는... 내가 마음을 홀리고 감각을 함정에 빠뜨리는 법을 알려줄 수 있다. 어떻게 명성을 병에 가두고, 영광을 끓여내고 죽음을 멈출 수 조차 있는지 알려주마.”

Harry’s hand shot up.

해리가 높게 손을 들었다.

“What is it, Potter?” Snape asked, irritated.

“뭐지, 포터?” 스네이프가 짜증이 난 것 처럼 물었다.

“What’s the value of these potions on the open market?”

“공개 시장에서 이 포션들의 가치는 얼마나 나갑니까?”

“What?”

“뭐라고?”

“Why are you teaching children how to make these valuable products for ourselves at a schoolteacher’s salary instead of creating products to meet modern demand?”

“왜 교수님은 현재의 수요에 맞춰 제품을 만들어내지 않고 교사의 월급을 받으며 아이들에게 이 귀중한 제품을 스스로 만드는 법을 알려주시는거죠?

“You impertinent boy–“

“이 오만한—”

“Conversely, what’s to stop me from selling these potions myself after you teach us how to master them?”

“반대로, 교수님이 가르쳐준대로 저희가 이것들을 다 터득했을때 이 포션들을 팔지 못할 이유가 뭐있죠?”

“I–“

“나는—”

“This is really more of a question for the Economics of Potion-Making, I guess. What time are econ lessons here?”

“이건 포션 제조의 경제학에 더 알맞은 질문입니다. 여기 경제학 수업은 언제죠?

“We ha-ve no economics lessons in this school, you ridiculous boy.”

“이 학교에 경제학 수업 같은건 없다, 터무니없는 소년.”

Harry Potter stood up bra-vely. “We do now. Come with me if you want to learn about market forces!”

해리 포터는 용감하게 일어섰다. “바로 지금 생겼어요. 시장의 힘을 배우고 싶다면 날 따라와!”

The students poured into the hallway after him. They had a leader at last.

학생들은 해리를 따라 복도로 쏟아져 나왔다. 그들은 마침내 지도자를 갖게 되었다.

Harry and Ron stood before the Mirror of Erised. “My God,” Ron said. “Harry, it’s your dead parents.”

해리와 론은 망욕의 거울 앞에 섰다. “세상에” 론이 말했다. “해리, 너의 돌아가신 부모님이야.”

Harry’s eyes flicked momentarily over to the mirror. “So it is. This information is neither useful nor productive. Let us lea-ve at once, to assist Hagrid in his noble enterprise of raising as many dragon eggs as he sees fit, in spite of our country’s unjust dragon-trading restrictions.”

해리의 눈이 순간적으로 거울을 향해 깜빡였다. “그러네. 이 정보는 유용하지도 않고 생산적이지도 않아. 그냥 가서 우리 나라의 불공평한 드레곤 거래 규제에도 불구하고 원하는 만큼 드레곤 알을 사육하는 해그리드의 고결한 사업을 돕자.”

“But it’s your parents, Harry,” Ron said. Ron never really got it.

“하지만 이분들은 너의 부모님이야, 해리.” 론은 말했다. 론은 정말 이해하지 못하고 있었다.

Harry sighed. “The fundamental standard for all relationships is the trader principle, Ron.”

해리는 한숨을 쉬었다. “모든 관계의 기초적인 기준은 거래자 원칙이야, 론.”

“I don’t understand,” Ron said.

“무슨 소린지 모르겠어.” 론이 말했다.

“Of course you don’t,” said Harry affectionately. “This principle holds that we should interact with people on the basis of the values we can trade with them – values of all sorts, including common interests in art, sports or music, similar philosophical outlooks, political beliefs, sense of life, and more. Dead people ha-ve no value according to the trader principle.”

“당연히 모르겠지.” 해리가 다정하게 말했다. “이 원칙은 우리가 다른 사람들과 교환할 수 있는 가치를 기반으로 상호작용을 해야 한다는 거야. 여기서 가치란 예술, 스포츠, 음악, 비슷한 철학적 관점, 정치적 신념, 삶의 양식 그리고 그 외의 것 등 모든 종류를 포함해. 거래자 원칙에 따르면 죽은 이들은 아무런 가치가 없어.”

“But they ga-ve birth to y–“

“하지만 이 분들을 너를 낳아—”

“I made myself, Ron,” Harry said firmly.

“나를 만든건 나야, 론.” 해리는 단호하게 이야기했다.

“Give me your wand, boy,” Voldemort hissed.

“너의 지팡이를 다오, 소년.” 볼드모트가 뱀의 목소리로 말했다.

“I cannot do that. This wand represents my wealth, which is itself a tangible result of my achievements. Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think,” Harry said bra-vely.

“그럴 수는 없어요. 이 지팡이는 저의 부를 상징하니까요. 이는 제 업적에 대한 유형의 결과라는 뜻이죠. 부는 사람의 생각할 수 있는 능력이 만들어내는 제품이죠.” 해리가 용감하게 이야기했다.

Voldemort gasped.

볼드모트의 숨이 턱하고 막혔다.

“There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist.”

“영합주의자보다도 더한 겁쟁이들이 있지. 바로 유행에 휩쓸리는 비-영합주의자들이야”

Voldemort began to melt. Harry lit a cigarette, because he was the master of fire.

볼드모트는 녹아내리기 시작했다. 해리는 담배에 불을 붙였다. 그는 불의 주인이었기 때문이다.

“The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities. The minimum wage is a tax on the successful. The market will naturally dictate the minimum wage without the government stepping in to determine arbitrary limits.”

“지구상의 가장 작은 소수집단은 개인이다. 개인의 권리를 부정하는 자들은 자신들이 소수집단의 수호자라고 말할 권리가 없지. 최소 임금은 성공한 자들에게 적용되는 세금이다. 정부가 개입하여 변덕스러운 제한을 두지 않아도 시장이 자연적으로 최저임금을 정할거야.”

Voldemort howled.

볼드모트는 울부짖었다.

“I’m going to sell copies of my wand at an enormous markup,” Harry said, “and you can buy one like everyone else.”

“난 내 지팡이의 복제품들을 막대한 가격인상을 하고 팔거야” 해리가 말했다. “그리고 당신도 다른 모든 이들처럼 하나 살 수 있을거야.”

Voldemort had been defeated.

볼드모트는 패배하였다.

“He hated us for our freedom,” Ron said.

“그는 우리의 자유 때문에 우리를 싫어했어.” 론은 말했다.

“No, Ron,” Harry said. “He hated us for our free markets.”

“아니야, 론” 해리가 말했다. “그는 우리의 자유 시장 때문에 우리를 싫어한거야.”

Hermione ached with desire for the both of them to master her, but nobody paid her any attention. They had empires to build.

헤르미욘느는 두 명이 자신을 지배해주기를 원하는 욕망을 세차게 느꼈다. 하지만 둘 모두 그녀에게 아무런 관심을 주지 않았다. 그들에게는 아직 세워야할 제국들이 남아있었다.
